Typical Day - C1
Arrival and Time on the Playground
Children arrive and are greeted by their teachers. They put away personal belongings in their classrooms, and they are accompanied to the playground by their teachers for early morning play time.
Circle Time
The teacher uses this group activity to explain the day's activities, play games, have show and tell, or simply engage the children in meaningful conversation.
Work Time
The teacher uses this time to engage children in doing interesting activities and to challenge them by setting reasonable goals and helping them reach those goals as they develop habits of attention and effort.
Snack
The children are provided with a healthy snack which includes fruit, vegetables, cereals and bread. They are also taught self-care routines, table manners, and social skills.
Playground Time
After snack, a half-hour on the playground is devoted to assisting children in developing their gross motor skills by engaging in activities such as swinging, climbing, riding tricycles, and playing in the sandbox.
Quiet Time
This is a ten or fifteen-minute period, usually after outside play, in which the children are encouraged to rest by taking a nap or looking at books quietly.
Freeplay
This time is set aside for children to choose activities in one of the centers set up in the classroom. They are free to play with toys, use art and learning materials, or enjoy books either individually or within a small group.
Summary of Curriculum for C1
The most important development at this level is that the children enjoy coming to school. They are introduced to self-help skills and classroom routines. Their attention skills are also developed during daily story time. The children learn through playing and their gross motor skills are developed. They also learn about personal hygiene. The children are exposed to
- Playing dependently and/or cooperatively.
- Various physical education movements e.g. up, down, in, out, jump with two feet together, jumping on one foot, walking, running, hopping, skipping and gallopping.
- Opposites big/small, fat/thin, short/long, etc.
- Sorting objects by color or shape.
- Scissors skills are constantly promoted in class and on the playground.
By the end of the first semester, the majority of the children are toilet trained and weaned from their bottles. Some common topics covered at this level are:House and Homes, All About Me, (Body Parts), Friendships, colors and Shapes, Transprotation, Fruits and Vegetable, Insects, Pets, Pond Animals and Ocean Creatures.
