Workshop on Teacher Day “Wan Kru”
In Thai society, teachers are in one way or another matched up to “Ruea Chang”, (the boat for hire). They are regarded to be a boat, successfully helping and taking care of all students until they reach their destiny. Thus, teachers here are held in the highest esteem. They are people who not only give knowledge but are a compass of life. They show direction and lighten a student’s way of life. These are the reasons Thai people respect and place high importance on teachers.
“Teacher Day” has been declared a national holiday in Thailand. Celebrated on January 16 of every year since 1957. On Teacher Day, children thank and pay respect to their teachers. They then perform the “Wai Kru” ceremony by bowing before their teachers while also offering them bouquets of flowers or flower trays with candles and incense. In performing the ceremony, the students thank teachers for having taught them, and they respond by wishing their students success and good luck in the future.
